BCOM 2000  The Business of Sports

In this foundational course, students are introduced to the sports industry from a business perspective. Students will become familiar with how a sport organization achieves its goals by managing people, money, and time. The curriculum also explores the evolving contexts within which sports organizations function, shedding light on current issues.

BCOM 3000  Sport Experiential Learning

Prerequisite: BCOM 2000 and 36 additional university credit hours or permission of the instructor
Students enrolled in this experiential learning course will complete an approved and supervised placement, applied project, or another experiential project, with a sport-related focus. Through this course, students will gain hands-on experience in solving real-world problems across various areas while applying theory and research to develop policies, make decisions, and plan programs and services.
BCOM 3300  Sports & Sustainability

Students will explore the intersection of sports and sustainability by understanding its core principles and their application to the sports industry. Students will examine sustainability in the context of sports and major sporting events and learn about some of the organizations working to support sustainability in sports. The course encourages discussion about how sports can make itself a more sustainable proposition and the role it can play to advance sustainability.

BCOM 4481  Business Case Competition

Prerequisite: Completion of a minimum of 60 credit hours of university courses
Students review and conduct best practice approaches for tackling business cases. Students develop their critical thinking, strategic analysis, and presentation skills. One purpose of this course is to prepare students to be eligible to compete as part of Saint Mary's University student teams in selected business case competitions, including the Inter-Collegiate Business Competition (I.C.B.C.).
BCOM 4491  Consulting for Real-World Impact

Prerequisite: Completion of a minimum of 60 credit hours of business courses or permission of instructor.
In this course students step into the role of consultants, partnering with local not-for-profit organizations or businesses to address operational challenges and emerging opportunities in a real-world context. Working in small teams, students will acquire knowledge of practices and approaches for change efforts and develop leadership skills to help organizations build capacity for innovation and sustainability. Projects will include conducting in-depth analysis, developing strategic recommendations, and presenting findings in professional reports and formal presentations to clients. Students have a unique opportunity to build their work experience portfolio while contributing their energy and expertise to help an organization effect positive impact.

In this course, students explore how environmental and social sustainability concerns arise as constraints or opportunities in businesses and other organizations, and how these concerns can be best addressed through the strategic and operational decisions made by these organizations.
