Advising
The Sustainability Management Major equips future professionals with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes needed to address the pressing challenges of the 21st century at the intersection of environment, society, and economy within the context of businesses and organizations.
The Major builds on the mandatory sustainability-focused courses that provide foundational exposure to sustainability concepts during their first two years of the BComm. Students then further develop their sustainability competency through selected sustainability-focused business courses in key disciplinary areas, additional sustainability study via interdisciplinary courses from the Faculty of Arts and the Faculty of Science, and completion of a capstone course with an experiential learning component.
The Major is intended to give BComm students the potential to double major, pairing the Sustainability Management Major with a second major or a minor.
Graduates of the Major will be well-prepared for entry-level positions in a wide range of sectors, including sustainable finance, sustainability reporting and assurance, corporate social responsibility, sustainability marketing, consulting, supply chain and logistics, and social enterprise development. They will also be equipped for roles in government, nonprofits, and international organizations, where sustainability expertise is increasingly sought. The program further provides a strong foundation for graduate studies in business, management, economics, or social and environmental fields.
The Bachelor of Commerce is a well-established, foundational degree and requires the requirements listed below alongside general graduation requirements.
Students registered in the Major must complete thirty-six (36) credit hours, as follows:
Three sustainability-related core courses from the BComm program (9 credit hours);
Five required sustainability-focused business courses (15 credit hours);
Three approved elective courses (9 credit hours), selected from three interdisciplinary clusters.
One required capstone course (3 credit hours).
Note: Students in the Sustainability Management Major at Saint Mary’s University are not eligible for the Sustainability Business Certificate program.
An average GPA of 2.2 out of 4.3 is required across these courses to graduate with a Major in Sustainability Management.
If one of these courses is used to satisfy another program requirement, the number of free electives is increased by three (3) credit hours.
Nine (9) credit hours must be selected from the approved course clusters as listed. • Choose three (3) credit hours from Cluster A and three (3) credit hours from Cluster B. • Choose three (3) credit hours from any of the three clusters (A, B, or C).
Note: Courses with an asterisk (*) after the title have prerequisite requirements. Please consult the Undergraduate Academic Calendar or the BComm Advising Office for guidance.
